Arizona Boneyards
My current project involves a micro-perspective of life after death. Light once gracefully glowed from this collection of deposed status symbols. I try to recapture the lost beauty of these forgotten titans of transportation.
The car in the 1950’s was the expression of the owner’s dreams and accomplishments. The outlandish designs included imitations of jets and rockets! The chrome attracted attention and reinforced a growth in conspicuous consumption. The many new colours (pink, orange, baby blue) reflected a new landscape of post war marketing.
Now these vehicles lie in their open graveyard, baking under the South Western sun. The extremely low humidity limits the spreading of the cancerous rust. My photographs demonstrate the effect of time on these “beautiful bodies”. Some of the attempts to repair or restore the finish has results in a kaleidoscope of colours. At times, the rust and its dynamic range of light competes for our attention!
